Ten Secrets to Small Business Success - Become a Voracious Reader of Business Articles

Most business owners find themselves in a vacuum from time to time. Being the idea person for the company and being the head of the company often results in isolation. Unfortunately this can lead to a void of new ideas. Every company needs new ideas to continue to grow and flourish. But finding new ideas can be a challenge, which is why you must become an voracious reader of business articles and publications.

There is no limit to the number of ideas you will find by reading business articles and publications. Most of the innovations we see in business today area result of someone taking an idea from one industry and applying it to an industry that hasn't used that process or technology before. You are likely familiar with a story of a product that was created for one purpose but resulted in an innovation in another product category (e.g. Post-it Notes). What ideas could you adapt from other businesses to become an innovator in your industry?

Reading articles and publications regularly will keep you at the cutting edge of innovation. You'll know when changes are coming that will affect the market you serve before they happen. What could this mean to you? Plenty. If you aren't aware of changes happening in the marketplace, you might be selling a product or service that has been rendered obsolete by change. Reading and keeping abreast of innovation will alert you to changes that are happening in other industries that will impact your industry.

When you read business articles you'll not only get great ideas that you can implement, you'll stay sharp and focused on your business and business in general. There is much to learn from other business owners who have already traveled the path that you are traveling. Many functions in business cross industry lines. You will learn best business practices by reading articles about other businesses.

Just reading articles isn't enough. Purchase a three ring binder and print the articles you read. Highlight the points that you find important as you read and keep the article in the binder for future reference. Do not file articles in a cabinet as we rarely refer to items in a file cabinet unless circumstances warrant. Keep this binder on a bookshelf or in another place where it will be in front of you daily. This will remind you to read more often and you will refer to the articles already read more frequently.

Reading business articles and publications regularly is your best defense against becoming isolated and stagnant in business. Use these powerful tools to remain sharp and innovative. Your customers will appreciate you more and your bottom line will continue to increase.
